  Feisty Little Shrimp in the Antarct...
  [Silent] JPL researcher Alberto Behar captured this video of a pinkish-orange creature, known as a Lyssianasid amphipod, swimming beneath the ice of the West Antarctic ice sheet during a joint NASA-National Science Foundation expedition November 2009. The unexpected discovery occurred after Behar and fellow researchers submerged the camera, which Behar designed, down an 8-inch-diameter hole in the ice sheet to obtain what are believed to be the first images of the underbelly of an ice shelf. The camera view is from below looking up. At a depth of 600 feet beneath the West Antarctic ice sheet, the small shrimp-like creature managed to brighten up an otherwise gray polar day.   Antarctica: Elephant Island...
  Recorded February 20, 2009. Elephant Island is an ice-covered, mountainous island off the coast of Antarctica in the outer reaches of the South Shetland Islands in the Southern Ocean. Its name was given by early explorers sighting elephant seals on its shores. It lies 779 miles west-southwest of South Georgia, 581 miles south of the Falkland Islands, and 550 miles southeast of Cape Horn. It is within the Antarctic claims of Argentina, Chile and the UK. The video begins as we approach Elephant Island on the Star Princess. We then sail around the mountains and glaciers on the island. We also see a whale. It is kind of hard to spot on the video, but if you look close you can spot the spray from its blow hole. We also see some penguins in the water. From: timvp.com
